Collaborative Decision-Making Initiatives

Jefferson and El Paso Counties, Colorado - Mineral Extraction Collaboratives - Designed and facilitated county-wide collaboratives to develop consensus-based mineral extraction plans, mine permitting procedures, and conflict resolution processes.

Amnesty International, Policy and Issue Resolution Process - Designed and facilitated the development of an international process to address and resolve policy issues in this multi-national non-governmental organization.BACK TO TOP

Internal Workplace Dispute Resolution Systems for Corporations and Governmental Agencies

Levi Strauss and Company - Assisted in the design, conducted capacity building training, and consulted on the implementation of an innovative four-step employee dispute resolution system that utilized internal coaching and mediation procedures.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police - Conducted multiple collaborative dispute systems design "workshops" where up to twenty-five representatives of management and labor designed new personnel dispute resolution systems for this national police agency.

United Airlines - Assisted in the design and implementation of a national employee dispute resolution system, trained internal cadres of facilitators to help resolve conflicts, and trained over 1000 mid-level managers and line supervisors from customer service, maintenance, baggage handling, and cabin appearance in conflict management procedures and skills.

U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) - Consulted on the design and implementation of national employee dispute resolution systems for DOI agencies, and trained internal cadres of mediators for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, Minerals Management Service, and Park Service.

Public and Environmental Dispute Resolution Systems

Board of Governors, U.S. Federal Reserve - Assisted in the design of a system to resolve disputes over the Community Re-investment Act, and prepared Bank Vice Presidents and Community Affairs Officers to act as intermediaries between lending institutions and community groups.

States of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Departments of Environmental Protection - Assisted in the design and training of internal state personnel to implement public dispute resolution initiatives to resolve large multi-party environmental disputes between the private, public and non-governmental sectors.

U.S. Air Force and the State of California - Facilitated the design and implementation of a national pilot dispute resolution system to address the clean-up of polluted sites on Air Force bases that were scheduled for closure. U.S. Bureau of Reclamation - Assisted in the design and implementation of an innovative national Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Advisor Program, to prepare internal agency specialists to advise and resolve a wide range of internal organizational and public disputes, including conflicts over dam and water systems operations, protection of endangered species, Indian water rights, and water contracts.

Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Environmental Impact Management Agency - Assisted in the design of a national conflict resolution system and trained a national cadre of intermediaries to resolve environmental and water pollution disputes.

Judicial and Community Dispute Resolution Systems

Neighborhood Justice Centers and Community Mediation Programs in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Anchorage, Alaska; Boulder and Colorado Springs, Colorado; and St. Louis, Missouri - Consulted, assisted in the design, and trained staff and mediators for local dispute resolution entities which assist in the resolution of community, landlord/tenant, and municipal disputes.

Republic of Sri Lanka, Ministry of Justice - Consulted on the design and implementation of a 250-panel national mediation program, and trained trainers who prepared 2000 leaders to serve as mediators.

Republic of Haiti, Ministry of Justice, the Organization of American States, and the United Nations - Developed a model mediation system and trained intermediaries to serve in a court-based pilot project at the province level.

Water Law, Watersheds, and Dams

American River Water Contract and Environmental Impact Statement Negotiations, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the City and County of Sacramento, California, and East Bay Municipal Utility District. CDR conducted a situation assessment of a deeply entrenched water and environmental protection conflict dispute in Northern California that helped bring concerned parties to the negotiating table. Subsequently,CDR Associates designed and facilitated six months of multiparty meetings concerning the development of a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on use of American River water, protection of the environment, preservation of recreational amenities, and meeting municipal water needs in the San Francisco Bay area. The success of the meetings enabled key political decision-makers at local and national levels to reach a final agreement, and resolve decades-long water conflicts in California's Central Valley and Bay Delta.

International Dispute Resolution Systems

Tri-National Dispute Resolution System Design - North American Free Trade Agreement. Facilitated the design and implementation of a new dispute resolution process for the produce industries of Canada, Mexico and the United States.

United Nations. Designed and delivered a model Dispute Systems Design and Governance Programme to prepare African leaders from government and civil society to develop integrated dispute resolution systems to address and resolve a wide range of public conflicts. Bulgaria Multi-Cultural Cooperation Initiative. Assisted in the design and development of a national system of Multi-Cultural Cooperation Commissions in multiple cities to address issues and resolve disputes between ethnic Bulgarians, Turks and Romany (Gypsies).

Organization of American States, PROPAZ Program. Consulted on the design of an inter-sectoral conflict resolution initiative and system to address issues of refugee return, re-integration, and land distribution related to the implementation of peace accords that ended the 36-year civil war.

South African National Peace Accord Structures. Consulted on the design and implementation of a national system to address political conflict related to the end of Apartheid, and trained a national cadre of intermediaries to manage and resolve multi-party political and racial disputes.
